The Technical Synthesis of Urea Formaldehyde Resin

Urea-Formaldehyde Resin (UFR) is a non-transparent thermosetting polymer synthesized via the polycondensation of formaldehyde with urea in a multi-stage alkaline-acid process. The synthesis pathway controls the molar ratios of urea and formaldehyde to achieve optimal molecular weight distribution while minimizing free formaldehyde content.

Our advanced automated reaction loops divide the polymerization cycle into three distinct phases:

  1. Alkaline Methylolation Phase: Formation of mono-, di-, and tri-methylolureas under pH 7.2–8.0 with precise temperature control.
  2. Acidic Condensation Phase: Catalyzed polymerization under pH 4.5–5.2 to construct methylene ether links, building the necessary resin viscosity.
  3. Neutralization & Stabilization: Adjustment of pH to alkaline range (7.5–8.2), addition of final urea charge to scavenge excess free formaldehyde, followed by rapid cooling.

This process results in a high-strength adhesive with fast curing speeds, high water resistance, and low formaldehyde emissions, meeting international wood composite requirements.
